The Viper was conceived as a historical take on the classic American sports car. The iconic AC Cobra was a source of inspiration, and the final version of the Viper bears this out with its powerful engine, minimalist straightforward design, muscular and aggressive styling, and high performances. Some saw claims to kinship with the Cobra as a marketing exercise, ignoring that Carroll Shelby was heavily involved in the initial design of the Viper, and subsequent design of the Viper GTS coupe. Notably, the later (1996 through 2002) Viper GTS coupe took a few design cues from the Pete Brock designed Shelby Cobra Daytona. Though the proportions seem similar at first glance, the designs are quite unique. Carroll Shelby was key in the development of the RT/10 as well as having a hand in the development of the GTS model.
The Viper was initially conceived in late 1988 at Chrysler's Advanced Design Studios. The following February, Chrysler president Bob Lutz suggested to Tom Gale at Chrysler Design that the company should consider producing a modern Cobra, and a clay model was presented to Lutz a few months later. Produced in sheet metal by Metalcrafters,[4] the car appeared as a concept at the North American International Auto Show in 1989. Public reaction was so enthusiastic, that chief engineer Roy Sjoberg was directed to develop it as a standard production vehicle.
Sjoberg selected 85 engineers to be "Team Viper," with development beginning in March 1989. The team asked the then-Chrysler subsidiary Lamborghini to cast some prototype aluminum blocks based on Dodge's V10 truck engine[citation needed] for sports car use in May. The production body was completed in the fall, with a chassis prototype running in December. Though a V8 was first used in the test mule, the V10, which the production car was meant to use, was ready in February 1990.
Official approval from Chrysler chairman Lee Iacocca came in May 1990. One year later, Carroll Shelby piloted a pre-production car as the pace vehicle in the Indianapolis 500 race. In November 1991, the car was released to reviewers with first retail shipments beginning in January 1992.

The Maruti Suzuki Alto has been the kingpin among small cars since ages now. It is quite astonishing to see that its sales figures have hardly dropped below 25K/month in the past six months. It is such a popular car in India that it became the best selling hatch in the world.

A couple of weeks ago we reported that Audi’s upcoming and completely drool-worthy RS5 would be getting a free-reving 4.2-liter FSI V8 good for 470 hp. Trouble is, we also reported that the next RS4 would be getting a supercharged 3.0-liter V6 , a variation of the mill found in the 2010 S4 but also good for about that much power (450 hp according to reports). However, the good people at fourtitude.com are singing a different, hoonier tune. The trouble is that the S5 currently uses a 4.2-liter V8 tuned to 350 hp, and it wouldn’t make much sense to have the uber RS5 show up at a dealership with less cylinders than the penultimate car. Also, why build two 450-470 hp engines, when one would work just fine? Fortitude is claiming that a source “of the highest level at Audi” has confirmed that both the RS5 and RS4 will get stonking, tweaked-out versions of Audi’s sweet 4.2-liter FSI motor. That means a V8 with a crazy, 8,000+ rpm redline. And that my fellow Fiends, makes us happy. Ecstatically so.

It takes just one corner to understand why the RS4 can hold station with the M5 so comfortably. While the M5 is scrabbling for traction, the RS4 is deep into its power curve and making every single horsepower count. It feels more agile, too. The steering isn’t quite as communicative as the M5’s heavy set-up, but it’s quicker and lighter, making the RS4 feel much more nimble. The nose responds with real snap, and the firm suspension keeps front and rear in perfect unison. Despite being stiffer than the M5 (except in the BMW’s hardest setting, which is really only good for circuit use) the RS4 keeps its wheels in contact with the surface more efficiently. It’s a devastating showing by the Audi.
Having said that, the BMW has the RS4’s number when the road unfurls and starts to sweep rather than switch back on itself. It’s a very odd sensation when you’re absolutely flat in the Audi, V8 at full cry and spinning at 8250rpm, and the back of the M5 Touring just keeps on getting smaller and smaller. It sounds absurd, but if you really wanted to you could nudge the limiter on these N-roads without any problem.
We head away from Epernay stunned by the M5’s turn of speed but deeply impressed by the Audi’s agility, traction and poise. It feels mighty on the autoroute past Reims and up towards Charville-Mezieres, too. It lacks the BMW’s other-worldly top-end, but makes up for that with even greater stability and a torquier delivery that allows you to simply leave it in sixth even when you’re bottled-up behind trucks and want to blitz back up to 100mph.
Worryingly for the M5, we’re heading for roads that should be a happy hunting ground for the smaller, lighter RS4. Just the other side of Charville-Mezieres the road narrows as it climbs and weaves its way up a steep hillside. The surface is craggy, many of the corners are blind and the edges are lined with forbidding rocks that will make any mistake potentially very, very expensive. What you need here is something compact, responsive and totally predictable. In other words, what you need is an Audi RS4.
Unsurprisingly the Audi thumps up the hill with sublime confidence. It really does feel narrow, almost old-fashioned compared with the M5 (the interior of the BMW is fresher, and a nicer place to be over long periods) but there’s nothing vintage about its turn of speed. The engine is fantastic everywhere, be it hauling at 3000rpm or hammering past 8000rpm, and the six-speed ’box shifts sweetly, although it feels a little fragile in the face of such a relentless onslaught from the quad-cam V8 and you sometimes seem to beat the syncro on upshifts. No such concern about the eight-pot brakes, which are simply superb.
The chassis balance itself is one of mild understeer. Sense the front running wide and you have to back off – more power equals more understeer. Having said that, on medium speed corners – and if you’re feeling brave enough to turn it in on the brakes – the rear end will start to get involved. It never really kicks out, but you can sense a subtle shift as the car takes on a bit of attitude and keeps the nose pointing at the apex. The RS4 even seems happy to alter its line mid-corner according to your throttle inputs. Clearly the quattro system’s 40/60 front/rear torque split pays dividends here.
So, is there enough to justify the price premium of the M5 over the RS4? Well, there’s no question it has the Audi beaten in terms of pure straight-line pace, nor that it’s a more rewarding and thrilling car right at the limits of grip. But the truth is that you can’t use all of that performance without risking a jail sentence, and it’s very unusual to stumble across roads like the one that rises out of Charville-Mezieres on an everyday basis.
At a slightly saner pace the RS4 is irresistible. It feels all of those 170kg lighter, biting into turns with incredible tenacity and speed, displaying ruthless body control. The V8 works harder lower down the rev-range and the manual ’box is more satisfying. Sometimes the M5 can feel a bit lazy, a bit uninspired, whereas the RS4 always feels keen, alert, instantly responsive. It’s a beautifully executed car and, in Avant form, more desirable than ever. As it stands, it’s our favourite estate. Well, 95 per cent of the time, anyway.

Motivating the Audi RS4 was a high-performance 4.2-liter V8 good for 420 hp and 317 pound-feet of torque; the engine offered 80 more horsepower than you'd find in the S4. Only one transmission was offered: a six-speed manual. Audi's Quattro all-wheel-drive system made sure the wheels never broke their kiss with the road.
This Audi's cabin placed an emphasis on clean lines. Though there was the requisite supple leather, plushness wasn't the focus; rather, the car's interior championed a pared-down aesthetic that favored sleekness over opulence. The RS4's sport seats looked good and felt good, offering bolstering that cradled you in the corners without ever being too overwhelming. There was ample room for those in front, but rear seat passengers typically found their accommodations a bit cramped.
But of course, this sport sedan was all about performance. At its debut, the Audi RS4 seemed to have a couple of strikes against it. Weighing in at about 4,000 pounds, it was one of the more porcine players in the class. And its design placed the V8 engine heavily over its front axle, compromising steering feel and weight distribution. But somehow the RS4 managed to transcend all this the way a Teflon politician transcends a scandal.
Certainly helping matters was the Dynamic Ride Control system. DRC linked the diagonally opposite front and rear dampers with a gas-charged reservoir to allow more compliance when front and rear dampers were compressed at the same time, ensuring a comfortable highway ride with minimal compromise during performance driving.
In reviews, we found that the RS4's handling was near perfect, with the sort of steely composure that remains undaunted no matter what. Acceleration was explosive, shifts were quick and a broad torque band ensured that there was ample power underfoot for all situations. In testing, we measured a 0-60-mph time of just 4.3 seconds.
